Smiths MRO is a sub-divsion of a larger business - Smiths Advanced Metals.
Smiths MRO focuses on raw material support for the global aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul market. Our business is supported by a broad and diverse stock range with a dedicated team that provides outstanding service levels required for our industry.
301 stainless steel is one of the most common of the 300 series austenitic steels. It is widely used in aircraft in sheet form and comes in four main conditions and specifications, which offer different strengths according to your requirements.
The alloy offers numerous benefits, including good resistance to atmospheric corrosion. However, the alloy is susceptible to carbide precipitation in the welding zone which may restrict the alloy's suitability for specific applications. Our 301 sheets also benefit from high strength and good weldability, and the finished product affords a pleasing aesthetic appearance. Material ductility is also good after cold working, although cold working removes the alloy's non-magnetic characteristics. Corrosion-resistant performance is at its best in the cold worked and annealed state.
Type 301 stainless steel sheet finds extensive use in the aerospace and MRO sectors with engineering applications, including structural parts, instrumentation panels, cabin interiors and aesthetic trims.
The conditions are achieved by cold working the metal and include Condition A (Annealed) (AMS 5901), quarter hard (AMS 5517), half hard (AMS 5518) and hard (AMS 5519). Smiths MRO offers all of these conditions in stock according to the AMS specifications, such as AMS 5517 or AMS 5518. Our stock ranges include incremental thicknesses from 0.016" to 0.100".
